Still reflecting on the incredible energy, honesty, and depth of conversations at the #IdentityShield Conference in Pune. What stood out most wasn’t just the tools or technologies we discussed, it was the mindsets.

During the panel and Q&A, a few themes kept coming up again and again: 🔹 If we were building security from scratch today The consensus was clear: Start with fundamentals in year one, clarity of risk ownership, secure design thinking, strong identity foundations, and people who understand why security exists. What can wait? Over-optimizing tooling before teams, processes, and decision-making maturity are in place.

🔹 Why “users will behave as intended” is still a myth we cling to Organizations often assume perfect behavior because it’s convenient. Reality breaks that illusion fast. Some of the most effective security improvements we discussed came not from adding another tool, but from better communication, contextual training, and behavioral insights, meeting humans where they are.

🔹 Leadership perspectives truly matter Who’s in the room does change how risks are prioritized. Diverse leadership challenges assumptions, asks harder questions, and often spots false confidence. One uncomfortable truth we discussed: some practices organizations rely on heavily today create a false sense of security dashboards without decisions, controls without accountability.

🔹 What we’re still underinvesting in As environments evolve (especially with AI), one capability stood out as critically underfunded:

To leave everyone with something actionable, my ask to IT professionals, students, and future security leaders would be this, “Change the habit of chasing certainty. Security is not about eliminating risk, it’s about continuously making better-informed tradeoffs.”

A lot of hallway conversations circled back to AI, its disruptive potential, and the anxiety it creates. I’ve been writing more detailed thoughts on this, and if you’re interested:

On a personal note, it was heartwarming to be back in Pune and catch up with old friends and community folks, conversations that reminded me why community matters just as much as content.

Huge kudos to the miniOrange team, especially Anirban Mukherji, Dikshita Tiwari for a beautifully organized conference.

Grateful for the opportunity to share the stage, learn from incredible leaders, and be inspired by first-time speakers taking that brave step forward. Ankur Bhargava 🤗Jayson E.
