AI agents are becoming more capable but what actually teaches an agent how to perform a specialised task? That is where agentic skills come in.
Think of a skill as a reusable playbook for an AI agent. It can contain: • Instructions describing what the agent should do • Scripts or code that support the task • Tools and external services the agent may use • Permissions defining what the skill can access • Examples showing how the task should be completed
But here is the security catch: once an agent follows a skill, that skill is no longer passive documentation. It can influence decisions, invoke tools, access data, execute scripts, and sometimes change memory.
A malicious or poorly designed skill could therefore: • Read sensitive files • Access credentials • Run unexpected commands • Send data to an external system • anipulate the agent’s future behaviour This is why skills should be treated as executable trust—not just helpful instructions.

What is the first security check you perform before allowing a new skill or integration into your environment?
